The Cruel Art by Matteo Basilé
The catalogue retraces ten years of working of the great photographer Matteo Basilé, told through the exhibition of almost 50 works chosen from his most important series. Surrealistic and visionary atmospheres talk about different geographic areas, social backgrounds far apart, between Orient and Occident, real and surreal.
"Right the idea of perdition characterizes the inventions by Basilé who, as Modigliani, represents only lonely subjects to whom is required to choose a dress, a disguise, a costume that make them dramatic, desperate or tragic figures. In this way the sadism of the Basilé’s works is expressed like that of the theatre by Carmelo Bene; for a singular and unwanted consonance.
From the theatre of cruelty to a cruel and also masochistic art. But impeccable, incorruptible, without sentimental deceptions."
From the introduction by Vittorio Sgarbi

A Dream Within a Dream
"Matteo Basilé is from an ancient family of artists who, however, are not related apart; each of them, painter or sculptor, has adopted autonomous and diversified languages. Matteo Basilé uses digital photography to make painting, using linguistic prosthesis of the computer, able of expanding every vision and of instilling depth to the shining surface of the image".
"The creator is the architect, Basilé the one who establishes the artifice; the god of dreams and the god who dreams".
From the text by Achille Bonito Oliva within the volume.
