Mary Magdalene in Michelangelo’s Judgement

Since its unveiling, Michelangelo Buonarroti’s Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel has aroused great interest and continues to encourage the curiosity of those who gaze upon it. The author recognises for the first time in the scene Mary Magdalene, the most mysterious and controversial female figure in Christianity, alongside Christ the Redeemer. A compelling analysis, rooted in Christian hermeneutics, the iconographic tradition and Michelangelo’s poetics, in a new and engaging reading of one of the most famous works of all time, invested with new meaning. The volume thus presents the discovery of a key to the interpretation of the Judgement, hitherto hidden, allowing the reader and visitor to approach the most intimate and profound meaning of a masterpiece that continues to reveal itself to our eyes and minds, five hundred years after its creation.
