HISTORY OF ITALIAN WATCHMAKING – Bookshop Edition

This work rediscovers Italy’s role in the development of global watchmaking through its protagonists and their inventions. It highlights how, over centuries, a distinctly Italian DNA was forged, enabling the rebirth of Made in Italy high-end watchmaking in the 21st century.

The unprecedented photographs are accompanied by an impressive array of iconographic material, the result of the author’s research, supported by collaborations with leading collectors, museum institutions, historical archives, and production houses currently at the forefront of the Made in Italy resurgence in the sector.

Adding to this original treatment are two maps of Italy: one illustrates the diffusion of watchmaking art throughout the national territory from its origins until the end of the 19th century, indicating the birthplaces of various key figures in Italian watchmaking. The other suggests a tour of museums and locations worth visiting for those interested in or passionate about watchmaking and Italy’s heritage related to this art.

Preface by:
Carlo Maria Ceppi

Born in Turin in 1960, he comes from a family with a long watchmaking tradition dating back to 1850, inheriting a strong passion for the sector from a young age. After starting in the family business, in 1984 he joined the current Italian subsidiary of the Richemont Group.

His career progressed with roles of increasing responsibility: in 1991, he managed the Italian market for Piaget, becoming Director of the Cartier Horlogerie division in 1994. In 2002, he became the Italian Director of IWC Schaffhausen, and in 2008, the Italian Mission Delegate for the FHH (Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie), a position he held until 2013.

Since 1997, the year Richemont acquired Panerai, Ceppi has been fascinated by the Florentine brand. In 2013, he left IWC Schaffhausen to join Panerai, initially directing European markets and leading the transition to direct retail. Upon his subsequent return to Italy, he also took on commercial direction and responsibility for the Historical Archive, committing to “preserving the company’s technical and historiographical heritage.”
