The volume is a privileged access to one of the most prestigious and important artistic institutions in the world. The criteria used to group the works take into account the history of the collection, which until the 19th century reflected the artistic preferences of the sovereign on duty with the result of a very little systematic and homogeneous collection, even if full of extraordinary works and masterpieces. Only after the 19th century, thanks to the management mediated by the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, and, later, after the Second World War, thanks to the direct intervention of the State, the collection was oriented to the documentation of the development of artistic creativity. Therefore, the works, grouped according to the reference nationality (Italian, German, Flemish, and so on) and according to a chronological criterion, accompany the reader in the evolution of artistic language and style.
